Tunes You'll Like!
Tunes You’ll Like is a great new book packed full of well-known melodies! In my previous book, Building Blocks for Beginning Band, I talked about how important it is to play melodies because doing so helps us as musicians gain reading fluency and control of our instruments, while having fun making music. Many aspects of my teaching have changed over the years, but one constant I have found is that students are more interested when playing tunes they recognize. They are more apt to practice if they recognize the melody. It makes them feel like they have control and ownership over their instrument, giving them a sense of pride for being able to play melodies early in their musical career. Melodies have been kept in their original form—not simplified—and placed in a sequential order so that they are obtainable yet challenging for beginners through intermediate level players. The melodies can be played in a variety of styles including straight, swung, and funky. Be creative! Many of our parents and grandparents sang these familiar folk songs to us, and now I sing them to my children. Let’s keep these songs alive as a vibrant part of our traditional repertoire! These are tunes I like, and I know you’ll like them too! |
